On my continuing journey to build an author platform, I’ve found the advice of writers and authors with established platforms invaluable. Author blogs and communities are splendid places to mine for wisdom about the indie publishing industry or creative process, but sometimes I don’t have time to read dozens of blog posts. A writer’s got to have time to write, right? So the primary way I keep my ear to the ground on news and trends for authors is listening to podcasts, which you can easily do on your commute or when working out. Here are my picks for the podcasts that provide the most value for authorpreneurs:

The Creative Penn Podcast with Joanna Penn

Joanna Penn is one of the big players in the indie publishing scene. She publishes supernatural thrillers and non-fiction books, and she’s a New York Times Bestselling author–a coveted status for many indie authors. Her podcast is typically over the hour mark, which is longer than most, but totally worth your time. Penn often has authors, marketers, and influencers on the show providing valuable info for budding authorpreneurs to digest. I’ve found numerous strategies and resources to implement into my own efforts as an author and entrepreneur just from listening to this show. Highly recommended for anyone building an author platform.

The Portfolio Life with Jeff Goins

goins

Jeff Goins is a highly successful blogger with an audience numbering in the hundred thousands. His Portfolio Life podcast primarily focuses on the writing craft and providing readers with engaging, valuable content. The podcast is a nice short length, usually clocking in around the half-hour mark, but quality is not sacrificed in the least. Goins tends to tackle topics on writing, platform building, and even marketing with co-host Andy Traub, but occasionally he has high-profile guests like Michael Hyatt and Seth Godin join him on the show. Plenty of value is packed in for writers, bloggers, and authors on this podcast, so you don’t miss it!

Sell More Books Show with Jim Kukral and Bryan Cohen

Jim Kukral and Bryan Cohen tag team this fun podcast, which examines trends in the indie publishing sphere. Both are successful authorpreneurs with much insight to share. The show runs around 45 minutes and in that time, Jim and Bryan cover three tips for authors to sell more books and the top ten news stories of the week. There’s an incredible amount of information here for authors to take advantage of, from marketing strategies that drive books sales to SEO best practices for author websites. Plus, Jim and Bryan’s whimsical interactions give the show a light tone that keeps things fun, but always informative. Highly recommended.

Author Marketing Podcast with Jim Kukral

ami-podcast-1

Jim Kukral’s other podcast, Author Marketing Podcast, is another great resource for those entering the fray as indie authors. The best part about this podcast is that it’s only around eight minutes long, so even the busiest people can make time to enjoy it! Kukral provides valuable marketing tips and strategies in bite-sized chunks that have been helpful to me in my book promotion efforts. Due to the show’s length, there aren’t any co-hosts or guests–just Jim giving you his best insights into the independent publishing world, which is totally cool with me.
